The Anchorage school enrolment has rocketed this year. They expect it to grow more the next several months. They believe that families are moving from the bush because of lack of jobs, high fuel costs, and food bills. In one school they helped ease the transition by setting up separate lunch rooms where the rural kids can eat because the size of the school may be overwhelming. Anchorage school district is allowing 1.7 million to hire 18 more teachers to accommodate for the burst of new students. Schools in Fairbanks also report a similar growth.

I think the high fuel prices are going up and driving people out of their homes in the bush. I know a few families that have decided to move to Anchorage because it is just to expensive to live out here. This year alone there is a huge decrease in the amount of high schoolers, many of them went to Mt. Edgecumbe to get a "better" education. I know that the school was budgeted for 65 students but we only have like 45, something like that.
